“Lessons from Nephrology: Challenges in primary data collection in large cohort studies”

“The talk will cover obstacles in the setup, conduct, and analysis of a cohort study – in this particular case, the Berlin Initiative Study (BIS) comprised of elderly and very elderly participants (>70 years at baseline).

The BIS has been was launched in 2009 and will continue for at least a decade (through 2019 and beyond). During the presentation, Prof. Schäffner will address encountered epidemiological issues including selection bias and misclassification in terms of recruitment and retention of participants. Additionally, she will discuss means of ascertainment that may vary over the course of several years (i.e. lab. assays) and the ‘human factor’, an often
neglected but crucial parameter for the successful execution of an epidemiologic study.”
