“Mixed models for epidemiologists”

In this lecture, you will learn why mixed models are flexible and powerful tools for analysis of data with hierarchical or clustered structures and how to apply them.

Hierarchical or clustered data structures are frequently encountered in epidemiological research: longitudinal data, matched data, meta-analyses, multicenter or multi-country data, crossover studies, and time-to-event analyses with recurrent events. Once you realize their flexibility, power, and broad range of applications, you will see that you can incorporate mixed models more frequently in your daily work than you might expect. We will introduce the basic theory of mixed models, quickly touch on their implementation in some statistical software programs, and largely focus on the interpretation of such models.
